SAVING TAXPAYER DOLLARS
I cut state spending by enacting a law to prevent Medi-Cal fraud. I wrote a law to extend the Telemedicine program, which provides health care to underserved patients in rural areas while reducing costs.
AGRICULTURE
Recently, I was named Chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee. While agriculture is California’s largest industry, many challenges remain––ensuring adequate water supplies, meeting stringent air and water quality standards and competing in a global economy in the face of increasing production costs. I will work hard to ensure that our agriculture industry remains strong.
HIGH SPEED RAIL
I have been leading the effort for the High Speed Rail Bond, which would link the Valley to the Bay Area and Southern California with bullet trains to transport passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in just under 2 ½ hours. High-speed rail is the best environmental alternative to help solve our state’s gridlock, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect prime ag land. My legislation recognizes that the Altamont Corridor is complimentary to the Pacheco Pass route, and allows for funding for both on the November ballot measure.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Crimes against children disgust us all. I want to continue my work to stop child abuse and prevent crimes against children. I am the author of a measure to stop internet predators by requiring that computer technicians who find child pornography on computers they are servicing to report it to law enforcement. As a member of the Crime Victims United Advisory Board, I have continued to my work to ensure that the families who are victimized by crimes have a voice in our criminal justice system.
HEALTHCARE
Making health care more affordable and accessible remains a priority. We are facing a severe nursing shortage. I have authored legislation to create clear pathways for students interested in a nursing career. Another measure I am carrying will extend the Telemedicine program, which provides health care to underserved patients in rural areas while reducing costs.
JOBS AND THE ECONOMY
The current downturn in the economy has hurt families. In the wake of the home mortgage crisis, I held foreclosure prevention workshops to help those families struggling to hold onto their homes. But the real answer is developing more jobs for the Central Valley so that our citizens can prosper and the Valley economy can grow strong. My High Speed Rail Bond, on the November ballot as Prop. 1A, will provide 300,000 job-years in construction to California and millions of dollars for the California economy. It will create jobs in the Central Valley providing an important economic stimulus.
